Pumps Default to Cash Payment Required

If the pumps at the station don't properly read your debit/credit, the pump will automatically--without the customer's input or permission--default to CASH. Once a CASH sale registers on the pump, the station is unable to process a debit/credit payment. I inserted my card at the pump, and began pumping gas quickly because two cars were waiting behind me. At the end, I was offered a receipt, which I declined (never again!) and began to leave. The attendant stopped me to say I hadn't paid. I told him I'd used my card, and he replied it hadn't gone through. Why did the pump work if it didn't accept my card? Because that's the DEFAULT. There is no active choice made by the customer. I still didn't realize this would be a big problem until the attendant told me there is no way for the station to process the sale on my debit/credit card on the gas in pumped. No way at all. Cash in hand, or the manager wouldn't let me leave the property. I didn't have over $50 on me, so the manager told me to stay there and call a friend to bring me money or leave my driver's license with him while I drove to the bank. The first choice isn't an option in the middle of a workday (unless all your friends sit at home), and the second is ILLEGAL. When I pointed that out, the manager told me to stop being a *** that this was my fault for not knowing the pumps defaulted to cash payment, and for not having that much cash on me. I demanded the corporate phone number, which the manager told me wouldn't do any good. After asking twice more, he finally gave me the phone number, but told me the district manager probably wouldn't call me back for at least an hour, and he'd still make me stay there. But when I dialed the corporate number to leave a message, the manager said he'd FOLLOW me to the bank so I could make payment. The same debit card their pump had failed to read worked just fine at the ATM, and the gas was paid for. By that time, I'd had to reschedule an appointment with my client for the following week, so I not only burned time, but lost money for the day. The manager was right about one thing: the call to corporate was useless. The district manager was polite and called me back within an hour, but was useless. He admitted this has happened before, that the cash default was a known problem, but the pumps hadn't been reprogrammed because they were really new and expensive. The district manager agreed taking a person's license was illegal, but kept saying the station manager was such a nice guy. Clue-by-four: nice guys don't tell customers to commit an illegal act to fix a known company problem, and nice guys don't call customers names. The conclusion? "Sorry it happened, thanks for letting me know." The response of the station manager and the district manager let me know exactly the values of this company. The fact a known problem continues--and customers are blamed for it--lets me know the management's level of competence. So here's your warning: Unless you plan to pay cash, get your gas elsewhere. If you do use a credit/debit card, for heaven's sake don't touch the nozzle until an actual person confirms the pump will make the proper sale.

i was the manager where this occured and i am well liked at that station and i remember her being beligerent towards me cause of a important meeting.and i wanted call cops per protocol but she just wanted to leave and bring back money at her conveince and for record new pumps was there that day and if ur card doesnt read it will assume cash so sorry...my fault over something i cant control....

Guest

If a person accidetly pushes the cash button, the pumps won't read a card. The customer thinks it is on their card because they put it in the pump.

A lot of attedents probably don't know that, but it all comes down to reading the signs on the pump and doing what the little monitor screen tells you to do. If you can't run a self serve pump, go to full serve.

Guest

your dumb you said it offered you a receipt and you declined it. swifty service stations dont offer receipts, and you might of think you pressed the credit button and you hit the cash button. smh

Just for the record nobody called u that And u think u should left when u wanted today i salute u grow up we live in a new world

Heard one thing and pumped another

I pulled up to the side where they pump it and asked for $10 premium. After the dirty deed was done, I looked to see that $20 of unleaded regular gas had been pumped. The man returns to my window saying $20 regular as if he was repeating what I said... when ive been buying premium gas for 20 years, so I know for a fact unleaded would never come out of my mouth. Not to mention I had my $10 bill in my hand. I told him that he messed up and he says oh well I have to have $20!!!

Am looking for a job with Swifty in the southern Indiana area. After reading some of these reviews/complaints, let me just say that I sold cars for 10 years and ALL of my customers were treated with kindness and respect. The customer is #1 and people need to realize that in this competitive world, all people need to do is go somewhere else to do their business.

Anyway, if there is anyone whho knows of a job with Swifty Gas, let me know at either mikecormack2000@***.com, or my number at 812-697-****.Thank you and God bless. Mike

regardless of who started it sir.....you denied everyone of service!!!!......you just admitted that she went to the car and came back with a piece of paper which happened to be the paper from a government office( the license branch ) which was legal to accept.....so you just also admitted that you didnt even take the time to look at it cause you just seen it was a piece of paper and told her it would not do.....but had you taken the time to do your job sir and look at the piece of paper you would have seen that it was her picture id from the license branch which i will mention again is a government office!!! and also sir i did not cuss you when you gave me your name i said thankyou very much sir and told you to have a good day.....the cigs were for my daughter not for me she happens to be 21yrs old so why should i have to get out and buy her cigs when she can do it herself had there been someone working there that actually done their job......and im not giving up you can sit and write whatever it is that is gonna float your boat sir.....the point of the matter is that swiftys is a place of business which is trying to make money and you sir have a bad attitude and no customer service skills what so ever and because of you they have lost money and our business.....now with that said i have and will continue to copy these so i can send them in to the corporate office along with my complaint.....have a good day MAC DAVIS.....if that is in fact your real name that you gave me ,)

Pulled into the gas station and refused service without paying first

I pulled up at the pump asked for 40.00 dollars gas. Attendant asked to be paid first. I stated after he pump the gas. I showed him the money. He would not pump the gas before taking money. I have gone to that station for two decades. I have had problems in the past with quantities given for cost of dollar. For instance asked for fifty dollars and get forty five. Basically the service attendants are honest bit this one with a beard has a problem. In the past each attendant ask to see the money. They will come back after ping gas for payment of the money. That's the way it is supposed to occur. Please look into this matter.

Employee gall - smoking at pump.

Just got home from getting gas in my car at Swifty station on Eastern Blvd. in Clarksville at approx 2 PM April 2. New man on duty was smoking a cig within 10 feet of where I was pumping gas into my car.I asked him why he was smoking on duty in plain view at the pump. He said ....."hey man there is a 25 foot rule". He then tossed his sig butt on the concrete away from the pumps. Also, his bluejeans were halfway down his *** showing off alot of his red underwear.I've been going there for 15 years and this was a very bad and dangerous experience.

Told the attendant to pump $40 in gas. He pumped $48.55 and told me I owed him $8.55 in cash. He asked me to come back later in the evening to give him the cash before he showed short at the end of his shift. He gave me a fuel receit that showed $48.55. I got home and called my bank and my card was shown to be charged $48.55 at Swifty in Portland. I called the man and told him my card was charged the $48.55 and he appolygized. I just wonder if this is a scam of his.

You are full of ***! Your card would show $1 for about three days, so you did not see what he pumped, you are just a liar!

Sounds more like he accidentally ran the pump over - we have to stop the pumps by hand and we sometimes make mistakes. If you gave him a credit card and the $48.55 was charged to your bank card, then he absolutely fleeced you $8.55 - tell the manager and file a report with the home office, 1-80*-***-****.

Some people are the conversational type. Now, me, when I am shopping or whatever, I want to be left along and get my business tended to.

Why do so many people make such a fuss over employees greeting them? That isn't really part of their job. The job is to take care of business.

Some of your grammar, punctuation, spelling, and spacing between sentences leaves quite a bit to be desired. If I would worry more about those things than whether or not an employee greets you and has a conversation with you.

Refused 5.00 gas purchase/paying with 20.00bill

I went to the swifty on kentucky avenue indpls in 463221 on Sunday jan 27 2013@ 1pm. My gas light was on ..and I was almost completely out of gas! I told the attendant (an older man with whitehair, beard, glasses, and a very hateful atitude I needed 5.00 in gas and handed him a 20.00 dollar bill. He then got rwally hateful and said he didnt have change for it. I told him I was in empty and needed the rest yo get my (handicapped) daughters medicine. I said he could give me quarters or dollars in change I didnt care. He then angrily pulled out a wad of one dollar bills and said see this is all I got and it will leave me with nothing. He then just waljed away and went to sell somneone cigarettes and proceeded to give them change! ! I left in tears and DID run out of gas going to the next station! It is 20 degrees here with freezing rain coming. I had to walk to the next station (Shell).with my daughter in tow and thank god they were so kind as to give us a ride back to my car with a gas can. I know this doesnt seem major to you but I have always used swifty and everyone is usually very nice..but this man was not! I will let you know that I have been told I should just contact my lawyer and not even go to you..but I am an honest person and believe you should do the right thing..I only hope your corporation feels the same way in making amends

Well maybe you should have been paying attention and got gas BEFORE you were so low.

Guest

if your car was almost empty, why were you only getting $5 worth of gas? swifty attendants are only allowed to carry a small amount of cash because and they don't have cash registers - the employees also usually work alone and aren't able to get more change if they run out.

If 5 or 6 people come through getting $5 of gas and pay with $20s, or course he's not going to have change.

That said, he was probably miserable from working outside all day in the freezing rain you mentioned, but he was definitely a ***. Call the home office to complain, 1-80*-***-****.

Rude Gas Station Attendent

on 10/03/12 I pulled into the Swifty gas station in Delaware, Ohio on Route 23 going North. I live just down the road so I usually go there about 2 times a week for gas. When I pulled up the attendent took about 3 minutes to even realize I was there and when he started to walk out the door he was shaking his head and you could tell he was cussing because I was there. He came to my car and I told him I would just go somewhere else and he asked why. I told him what I saw and said I would start taking my business elsewhere's so that I didn't bother him. Then I drove off. This isn't the first time he has been rude. If you don't like your job then quite.. No one needs to pull up for service and get that kind of attitude. I will no longer be going to swifty.

Swifty of Hopkinsville Unethical

Friend applied for job and was hired on spot. They worked him open to close the next 3 days straight. During that time they had him get bolt cutters from Lowe's and then take them back used. They had a pump that spewed gas all over the ground and then supervisor yelled at customers. They "fixed it so that it would stop but continue to ring up without pumping gas. They said breaks were not allowed and he could not bring food or drink...for a 17 hr shift. Labor Board will hear. Also customers need to make sure you are receiving gas you are paying for.

IF the above was not bad enough....then you will love the update! Friend worked for only 3 days and was to be paid within 14 days per Labor Board.

Well....his check was first never sent to the station, then it was sent to station and the manager returned it to the main office, then in the end was forged. Friend worked first few days of August but has still not been paid. When calling the main office, they told him they would put a stop on the check and send him a new one. What he got as a copy of the check with a forged signature on the back.

The check was short by 12 hours. Then swifty could not return his calls. He left a message that he was filing a police report and a report to the department of labor. When he went to the Christian County Police, they called swifty and you will never guess.....Now swifty is interested in calling my friend.

Now they want to do what is right. NOw they agree they shorted him 12 hours and NOW they want to send him a new check. This is great! Ultimately you want to get paid for work you do.

My question is how many times does this happen and how few people fight for their money. My friend was going to have to go to Indiana to file another report. Thank you to the Christian County Police Department. I am confident he encouraged Swifty to do the right thing.

But it is still forgery and there still will be charges! Swifty get your act together and do what is right....investigate and clean house!

Attendant working is a complete ***.

I am a long time customer of the Swifty store on E. 2nd Street, in Franklin, Ohio. On my most recent visit, there were about 4 cars in the lot and it took me at least 15 minutes to get the attendant to approach my vehicle to even ask me what I wanted. He should already know, anyway, as he was hired weeks ago and I am a regular, once to twice a day customer for cigarettes, as well as gas. On this particular day both customers paid for their gas, 2 new customers pulled in and were trying to pump gas, while the whole time this *** Swifty has employed pumps over $30 worth of gas into another car in the full-service side of the station. I watched as the driver of this car turned red in the face and got angry because the man kept clicking the nozzle trying to top off the tank and leaked gas all over the man's car and the ground. Then he cannot even make correct change. As I said, I go there every day, the man cannot remember a cigarette brand, a price for any of them, or make change. I'm not sure how well he can count at all. I will not return to this Swifty while this man is on duty again!

It's hard to understand exactly what you're complaining about - you're angry because the employee doesn't know your brand of smokes? Is it his difficulty with arithmetic? Most Swifty stations, including the one in Franklin, don't have cash registers so the employees are required to do the math in their head - no easy task for the average citizen, let alone a poorly-paid Swifty attendant (trust me, I know how poorly).

Maybe try throwing the guy a tip or letting him keep the change on the smokes every now and then - it may help him remmeber you and you'll feel like a better person.

Atttentiong! Swifty gas doesn't do background checks

First i tip my hat to all of you for speaking up. I myself was just offered an attendant position within the company. Keep in mind i never met the manager or staff before, i simply answered the Now Hiring sign that's posted every 3 months. I share this because i found i was receptive of the date stalker, you know the one who doesn't know you and already has monogram towels made. He was calling both my cell phone and home phone constantly. He confessed he wouldn't bother checking my references be it work or personal; He said there are ways around the system. Then he was dictating how i will be a manager who by the way makes 8.25 an hr where as the attendant makes 8.00 hr. Wow what a future huh? So if there be any of you out there who feel that gut check in reference to working for the company. Know that you are being protected

Let me start off by saying that I work for Swifty. Your anger at this attendant is also justified, I don't know what his deal was.

I let customers pump their own gas if they want to because it often ends up helping me out considerably. But why did you pull into a gas station known for being full-service when you wanted to pump your own gas?

Swifty gas station in Delaware Ohio

On May7th,2012 I went to Swifty gas station on S.Sandusky Street. I went to the self service side,my sister in law was with me and told me she would get out & pump the gas since I am disabled and she wanted to help.

She didn't know I was paying with a debit card and pushed the cash button, when she realized I was using my debit card, she went in to pay the attendant and let him know what happened, neither one of had enough cash on us to pay and he would not let me go to the bank to get the money, I told him I would leave my ID and be right back, he said he had to call the police& escort me to the bank. When the police got there we tried to explain it was an honest mistake,he asked the attendant if I could leave my ID and go get the money, the attendant was unwilling to do that, we could not get anybody to come and bring us money, we were trying hard to find a way to pay, and the policeman said if the attendant wouldn't cooperate, he could charge us with theft, which I don't know how because we were still there and had not left the gas station. Finally the attendant agreed we could leave my ID and go get the money, we were back in 5 minutes and handed him the money and he finally gave me back my ID, but not until we paid the 2cents we went over.

I understand some people will *** without paying, but we would not have still been there trying to pay if we were going to *** without paying. I think the attendant was being a little unreasonable and giving me a hard time and I will not go back to that Swifty or any other Swifty station.

MrsLea01 Swifty does not have an inside card machine, you can only use thr card at the pump, anything else you buy there has to be with cash.

Guest

I work for Swifty, let me clear a few things up for you.

Most of our stations do not have an "inside" where you can pay. The buildings are for employee access only. There are some that have a small convenience store inside, however.

As for not being allowed to leave in your car to get the money, this is actually due to a corporate memo put out by Swifty's main office. It basically says that the person's vehicle has to stay on the lot while the driver, or whoever, either has money brought to them or walks to the nearest ATM. This is not the attendant's fault and he is not giving you a hard time.

The fact is, we're all terrified of losing our jobs at this point because corporate keeps tightening the noose. We're only allowed to carry $90 or less in small bills and we're no longer allowed to carry ANY large bills. This has led to several problems in the day-to-day operation of every station I've worked at, including not being able to accept $50 or $100 bills. This leads to complaints to corporate, which often leads to one of us losing our job, and here's the funny part, because of something corporate ordered us to do in the first place.

I'm not saying that there aren't power-tripping, rotten employees out there, but don't lump us all together and try to understand that you're not the only ones under pressure. Most of us are regular people, often radically overqualified for the job we do, trying to earn a living.

Guest

by every thing you just said the man did his job to the tee and your man at him for doing his job so he can feed his kids wow man you need to work a few days in your life

MrsLea01, nothing adds up about your stories. I do agree that the story is crazy and they mistreated this guy over a simple mistake.

but MrsLea01, you treat everyone like *** over simple mistakes. except when you're at Walmart, you treat them like *** because you think you're a manager there.

LAC L

He wouldn't let you pay for it with your debit card inside?? I have had a similar situation happen to me before(I'm not disabled)but I accidently pushed the cash button when I intended on using a debit card, but they allowed me to use the debit card inside. Something doesn't add up here.
